Property inspection
Can a thermal camera find pests?
What heat patterns may reveal about nests, animals and wall activity.
Short answer
Warm animals or nests may alter a visible surface temperature, but insulation, pipes and air leakage can create similar patterns. Thermal imaging does not identify a species or prove an infestation.
A practical workflow
- Scan when the target and background temperatures are likely to differ.
- Look for repeatable movement or localized patterns.
- Compare with building services and construction routes.
Common mistakes
- Identifying a species from a heat patch
- Ignoring hot pipes and wiring
- Disturbing wildlife without checking local rules
Choosing a camera for this job
Start with native IR resolution, thermal sensitivity, field of view and focus. Close electronics work often needs macro or manual focus; broad building scans benefit from a useful field of view and enough native pixels to resolve an anomaly from a safe distance. Compatibility and reporting workflow matter as much as the headline detector specification.
