HVAC
Thermal camera for HVAC troubleshooting
Check distribution patterns, coils, registers and duct leakage efficiently.
Short answer
Thermal imaging quickly visualizes distribution and anomalies, but it does not replace airflow, static-pressure, refrigerant or electrical measurements.
A practical workflow
- Let the system stabilize before scanning.
- Compare supply and return patterns rather than one pixel.
- Inspect ducts, coils and registers for uneven patterns.
Common mistakes
- Scanning immediately after startup
- Diagnosing refrigerant charge from an image
- Ignoring solar and envelope effects
Confirmation step: Verify the suspected cause with HVAC temperature, pressure, airflow and electrical instruments.
Choosing a camera for this job
Start with native IR resolution, thermal sensitivity, field of view and focus. Close electronics work often needs macro or manual focus; broad building scans benefit from a useful field of view and enough native pixels to resolve an anomaly from a safe distance. Compatibility and reporting workflow matter as much as the headline detector specification.
